Sarah and I returned home without speaking. We were both thinking about our conversation with Del-Coffey, Myra and Herman. Suddenly, it was hard to be optimistic that everything was going to be alright, and we’d have a future that was safe and civilized. After all, there’d be two species of human beings on the planet. War between the two would be inevitable – wouldn’t it?

We passed the ruined church. A group of Donna’s Corsairs had taken the first watch tonight – that is to say, three of them would sit on chairs on top of the flat-topped tower to keep an eye on the surrounding countryside, to make sure that no Creosotes or raiding parties of survivors crept up on us during the night.

Sarah linked arms with me as we approached our house. ‘Mardi Gras tomorrow. At least we have something pleasant to look forward to.’

‘Yeah, lots of funny hats and comical masks. We should dig the barbecue out of storage.’

‘It’ll be cold barbecuing food in the snow.’

I kissed her. ‘It’ll be fun. Come on, that big warm bed is calling our names.’

Just then, I noticed footprints on the front lawn, hinting that someone had walked up to our lounge window to look inside. They were big footprints – big boot prints, in fact. The tread of the boots had created a distinctive chevron print in the snow, roughly something like this (>>>>) and there was only one person I knew who had boots that with that kind of tread on the rubber sole.
